Khajuraho Introduction :
Welcome to Khajuraho - the Temple City of India. Khajuraho is globally famous for its elegantly engraved temples in stones. Tourists from all over the world come here to witness this immortal saga of Hindu art and culture sophisticatedly engraved in stone. When talking about temple architecture, the name of Khajuraho ranks top. Temples here are architecturally very beautiful & perfect and never fail to impress its visitors. The most major attraction of Khajuraho is, no doubt, its erotic sculptures engraved elegantly on the temples. Rightly engraved sculptures of full-bodied women in erotic postures on the temples portray the vista from Kamasutra - the archaic Indian erotica. That's why the temples of Khajuraho are called the Temples of Love. Apart from temple complexes - extremely famous for their outstanding architectural beauty and rightly engraved sculptures, at present, Khajuraho is just a small village in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. But, in ancient time, a thousand years back, Khajuraho was a big city and the capital of the Chandelas, Rajput Kings of middle ages who governed over Central India from the 10th to 12th century. Initially, there were over 80 temples in Khajuraho, but at present only 22 temples are standing in a realistic condition of preservation. These temples are dispersed over an area of around twenty-one square kilometer (21 km2 ).
Khajuraho Temples :
Khajuraho temples are globally famous for its unique temple complexes. UNESCO has designated Khajuraho as a world heritage site for its archaeological and historical temples. The temples of Khajuraho are dived into three significant groups: eastern, western and southern.
Eastern Group of Temples :
While you will explore the eastern group of Khajuraho Temples, you will see Hindu Temples as well as Jain Temples. Jain Temples are Parsavanatha Temple, Ghantai Temple and Adinatha Temple. Hindu Temples are Brahma Temple, Vamana Temple and Javari Temple.
Western Group of Temples :
The western group of Khajuraho is, no doubt, the most famous because the largest & most classic temples of Khajuraho feel right to this group. Some major temples of western group are Kandaria Mahadeo Temple, Chaunsat Yogini Temple, Chitragupta Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Matangeshwara Temple, and Lakshamana Temple.
Southern Group of Temples :
This group lies around 5 km from Khajuraho village. Duladeo Temple - dedicated to Lord Shiva and Chaturbhuj Temple - dedicated to Lord Vishnu are the major temples of this group.
How to reach Khajuraho :
By Air: Khajuraho is well-connected by airlines from Delhi, Varanasi, Agra and Kathmandu. By Rail: Neared railheads are Mahoba (64 km), Harpalpur (94 km), Satna (117 km), and Jhansi (175 km). Jhansi and Satna are well-connected with cities like Delhi, Mumabi, Kolkata, Chennai, Varanasi, Agra, etc. By Road: Khajuraho is well-connected by surface with the destinations like Mahoba, Chhatarpur, Harpalpur, Panna, Jhansi, Gwalior, Satna, Jabalpur, Agra, Sagar, Indore, Varanasi, Bhopal and Allahabad.
