Pondicherry :
There is evidence of the Pallava, Chola and the Vijayanagar empires around the city, yet, less is known about Puducherry before the colonial settlements. The relics of the famous archaeological city Arikamedu, provide a wonderful excursion for the history and archeology lover. The city port traded with the Roman Empire, it is through this port that India used to export silk, spices, and even birds, lions, and elephants to the Roman Empire in exchange for gold. In the 16th century, the Portuguese first arrived in Pondicherry, followed by the Danes in the next century. The French arrived in 1673 and re-planned the city. It gradually emerged with the fort at the centre, while the French quarters kept expanding to the south. The French planners had to reconstruct many of the houses, especially those of the Tamil community, to achieve their goal. This required strict regulations and it took almost a century for the French to complete their plan of the city with the fort at the centre and boulevards around it. In the 1760's the British destroyed the city and the fort. When the French reoccupied it, most of the buildings where reconstructed except for the fort. The British once again established their power over Pondicherry during the latter part of the 18th and early 19th centuries and as a result the construction of the city was stopped. The railway track, water supply system and most of the buildings that can be seen today were built during the 19th century. Pondicherry became part of the Indian Union in the early 1950's, with the French voluntarily relinquishing control. Presently the Union Territory of Pondicherry includes the Karaikal (in Tamil Nadu), Mahe (in Kerala) and Yanam (in Andhra Pradesh) which were the other French colonies.
