Spice Village, Periyar
Overview :
The Spice Village, Periyar is located in the midst of the Cardamom Hills in the Western Ghats in Kerala. The Spice Village is one of the best economy hotels in periyar and is situated right outside the periphery of the Periyar National Park and is an ideal set up for tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of Kerala. Set in the midst of dense green forest, The Spice Village has a lot to offer...Keeping intact the flavor of local tribes, the resort has been designed in a way that it merges with the surroundings. A stay in this village away from the din of urban life would rejuvenate your senses with the fragrances of cardamom and cloves and leave you wanting for more!
Location :
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is 190 kms from Cochin, 130 kms from the Madurai Airport, 100 kms from Munnar, 170 kms from Kumarakom Backwaters, 265 kms from the Kovalam Beach.
Accomodation :
Spread across eight acres of domesticated forests, the Spice Village has 52 cottages. Inspired from the dwellings of the local tribes, the cottages have thatched roofs made of elephant grass but are equipped all modern amenities. Spacious and simply furnished, the cottages have terracotta-tiled floors, wooden furniture and whitewashed walls. With a verandah all round each cottage, it is set on well-demarcated lawn. At the center of the village is a swimming pool against a background of topical tress and lawns. To get a better feel of the place, the hotel organizes boat rides and water safaris across the Periyar Lake inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve and forest treks inside the deep tropical forests of Periyar. A trip to Periyar is incomplete without a trip to the spice and coffee plantations, and the hotel takes care of it. The Spice Village also has an Ayurvedic Center offering healing treatments to ailments. There is also a provision for indoor and outdoor games.

The Spice Village has a banquet hall built in theatre style and can accommodate up to 40 persons.
Dinning :
Set in the 'Spice Land' in Kerala, the Spice Village serves a multi-cuisine menu. Rich with local spices, the hotel serves a variety of Indian and International dishes. Adding to that is the whole experience of eating. You could either choose to eat sitting on rustic wooden chairs in the proper dining room or simple take your plate out in the open. There is also the famed Tiffin Room that serves snacks all day long. Furnished with antique furniture, this restaurant also holds cookery classes for its guests.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Information :
Thekkady beckons are the adventure seekers, nature lovers and the animal watchers alike. Thekkady is renowned for the Thekkady/Periyar National Park. At the Thekkady National Park you may spot the wild elephants, leopard, wild dog, barking deer, mouse deer, Nilgiri langur (a primate), bonnet macaque, sambhar, porcupines, squirrels, gaur (Indian bison), wild boar and sloth bear besides the tigers and the Nilgiri tahrs. Along with animals Thekkady is home to monitor lizards, pythons, king cobras and flying lizards. Birds like darters, cormorants, ibises, gray herons, mynas, flycatchers, orioles, wood pigeons, kingfishers, kites, ospreys, thrushes, and parakeets add to the attraction of Thekkady. You may watch the animals on the move from the motorboats on the lake or from watchtowers only after prior permission. Else you may enjoy a walking tour of the Thekkady National Park with the local guides.
Major Wildlife Attractions in Periyar National Park :
Apart from Elephants, the other animals to be seen in the Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers here. Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which is rarely to be seen. The birdlife comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The reptilian population boasts Of Monitor Lizards that can be spotted basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore. Visitors who trek into the Periyar national park often see a Python and sometimes even a King Cobra. In the lap of the mountains, the Periyar wildlife sanctuary's environ is like a canvas of many shades. The fresh air of the moist deciduous forest gives one a chance to experience the peace and serenity and long to return for more.
Kumily :
Situated just 4-kms from Periyar, Kumily is a growing town where tourism is fastly catching up just like the spice trade, the major occupation of this small town. The town is also well equipped with the excellent hotels and resorts for accommodation.
Cradomom Hills :
Periyar and Kumily are the most convenient points from which visitors can easily explore Kerala's beautiful Cardamom hills. Guide will approach you at offers of trips via jeep or taxi to the hills and if you can get a group together, these trips work out as a good travel value.
Boat Cruises :
Boat cruises make the best option to check out the wilds of Periyar Sanctuary.Today the Periyar lake presents an excellent boating spot for tourists. Although it is unusual to see many animals from the boats, still you spot a family of Elephants, Wild Boar, and Sambar Deer by the water's edge. The upper deck is best for wildlife viewing when taking a boat cruise, but better turn up half an hour early to get the best seat. To maximize you chances, take the 7.00 am boat. You can also consider renting your own boat.
Best Time to Visit Periyar :
The best season to visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary is from the months of October and June.
How to Get there :
Air : Kochi (Cochin) at 200-kms or Madurai in Tamil Nadu at140-kms are the nearest airports from Periyar. Rail: Kottayam at 114-kms is the nearest railhead from Periyar. Road: Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar is well served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
General Info / Tips: - Note :
After heavy rains, chances of good wildlife sightings are very slim as the animals only come to the lake, when water sources inside the forest have dried up.
