Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram :
"Mamallapuram", named after Mamalla, a Pallava king, Narasimha Varman I (630 AD-668 AD), created the earliest of its vast array of monuments. There are, or rather were, two low hills in Mamallapuram, about 400m from the sea. In the larger one, on both sides, there are eleven excavated temples, called Mandapas. The mystery of Mamallapuram and its sculptural extravaganza is a living testament of the artistic temperament of the Pallavas, till date it is a breathtaking experience just to watch them. Situated just 60 km off Chennai on the Bay of Bengal coast in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Mamallapuram was a flourishing port town of the Pallava rulers of South India.
The Shore Temples :
The Shore Temple is an extraordinary site at the Bay of Bengal and at high tide the waves sweep into the walls. The sculptures have been eroded by the winds and waves for thirteen centuries. There are 3 shrines at the Shore Temple. Two of them are of the Saiva* period and the third is of the Vaishnava period. There are Vimanas over the Saiva shrines but none over the third; it seems to have disappeared with time and built by King Narasimha Varman II Rajasimha. A govt recognized guide will be of much help in understanding the mythological significance.
Vedanthangal bird sanctuary :
This water bird sanctuary is located at a distance of 48 km from Kanchipuram. This bird sanctuary provides habitat to Storks, Egrets, Cormorants, Darter, Flamingos, Pelicans, Moor hens, Herons, Kingfishers, Sandpipers, White Ibis, Spoonbills, Swans and grey Wagtails. The birds can be viewed from the bank or from the watch tower. The best season time is between October and March, when a large number of migratory birds visit.
