Madurai :
Madurai, also called the Temple city, is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu. This cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, the heritage of which dates back to about 2500 years, is situated on the banks of the River Vaigai. Madurai has been a part of the Chola, Chera and Pandya kingdom and was the pedestal of Tamil literature with many masterpieces created during the period known as the Sangam Age, the Golden Era of Tamil Literature.
Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple :
This world renowned temple is the biggest attraction of Madurai. The original Meenakshi temple was built by a Pandya king and was renovated to the current form by Tiurmalai Nayakar. This is considered as an architectural wonder, what with the thousand pillared hall, this is easily one of the biggest temples in India.
Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal :
This national monument was the palace of the famous ruler of Madurai, Thirumalai Nayakar, who ruled Madurai in the 17th century. Being a great patron of art and architecture, he built the palace in the Indo-Sarsenic style. Divided into two large and separate sections, each portion was self-contained, with residences, theaters, shrines complete with a pond and garden. The ceilings decorated with paintings, the gigantic pillars and architectural structures represent the architectural mastery of the craftsmen and this monument is regularly featured in Indian movies.
Thiruparankundram :
This temple is a perfect example of religious harmony, with a temple and a mosque regularly visited by people irrespective of their religion. In addition to the Thiruparankundram temple, where a divine marriage is believed to have taken place, an Islamic durgah is located next to the temple which is a grave of an Islamic saint. People throng this holy place with the belief that their wish will be answered in a short while.
Gandhi Museum :
In addition to the details about Mahatma Gandhi, this museum is most visited for the original blood-stained garment of Gandhi when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse.
